Narrows Fun

Jason and I took off with some great friends, sans kiddos, for a Adult Skate Weekend! A much needed reprise from the busy life with kids and time to just enjoy each other. Bright and early on a Saturday morning, the gang packed up in the Young's ride and headed to Zion National Park. For those who have not been, especially you locals, it is a beautiful place to go and enjoy. (and you could even make it a day trip) We got there, gave the rental girl far too much grief, made fun of the video (Who couldn't? It showed how to dispose of human waste far too graphically!) and rented our our highly recommended shoes, socks and walking stick. (Yes, they were definitely needed)

We chose to hike the Narrows. The Narrows, you ask? The Narrows is where the Virgin River has carved a gorge for miles and miles through the park. There are walls that reach up to 2000 feet and some spots that are only about 20 feet wide. Hence, The Narrows.

The river is the "trail." As you can guess, most of the hiking is in the river. The water was a toasty 49 degrees. Brrr... You actually got used to it and it was colder out of the water than in. You can really see the enormity of these walls compared to the people. It is really stunning!

Being the giant that I am... har, har... The water was a little higher on me than the rest. So, while everyone was knee high, I pretty much was waist high. It provided for a lot of laughs!

Tricia forging her path like a mad woman! You go, lady!

Here are the fabulous girls, Me, Maren & Tricia. We hiked with the best of them! We managed to stay standing and did not fall once. There were some places that the water was travel at a good pace, so it is saying a lot that us delicate flowers stood immovable. OK, well, a few little quivers, but no falling!

Casey was such a gentleman and made sure we did stay up right. Damon and Jason blazed the trail...

... and Casey fell back and made sure the girls were good. At one point, his fancy footwork landed him on his back. Despite the loud cackling that was heard, we felt terrible that he was the "man down." His shirt was soaking wet, so he wore Maren's sweatshirt. This picture was far too funny to leave out. The sweatshirt and when I click the camera, he threw his shirt right in front of Maren's face. It was perfect timing and unintentional!

Casey & Maren is their cute splendour!

Tricia & Damon and their sparkling smiles!

The Mr & I

It was just beautiful and peaceful. The further we went, the less people were there. It was nice just to hear the rushing river and enjoy the vistas that surrounded us.
After hours of hiking, we took our old, tired bodies back to our hotel rooms. We enjoyed a nice dinner without the interruption of kids and then did a little shopping. (Of course, FOR the kids) Out hotel was gorgeous and had a wonderful view from our room.
On our way home, we were already planning the next trip on our way home. Great setting, great company, great times! What more can you ask for? Thanks, Whiting's and Young's, for such a great weekend! Thanks, Mom and Dad, for entertaining my wonderful kids for the weekend. Thanks Jason for being my husband- life is just more fun with you!

SO...I've never been much of a wilderness girl, but dare I say that I think you may have sold me on a future trip to the Narrows?! It looks so beautiful, slightly adventurous, and just all out fun! Maybe if it is a DAYcation ONLY (certainly I don't do tents, or no showering), perhaps the Johnsons can tag along with the Bakers! What do you say ummmmmm gaaaaaaaaaaaay?

Sounds like a totally great trip. I've always wondered what hiking the Narrows entails, where one might get the gear, etc. Thanks for the all the details. I'm glad you guys had so much fun!
