Fill the Nest

I was not going to post this, but have had many requests, questions and even a threat (thanks, Tricia- haha!) I do not want to sound self-important or like I am boasting. I just was lucky enough to be involved in one of the most happy occasions on Earth- a baby shower! My goal was to make it fabulous and the most memorable for an awesome friend. I called on my resources (thanks to all the gals who gave me ideas, help, or just a little encouragement) to make this shower as special as possible. Here's a little background:

I met Jenn in the hallowed halls of ClearVision Eye Center. We quickly became friends as we worked together. In fact, there was an article on "work spouses" and we fit all the qualifications. I now refer to her as my "work wife." At any given time, you will find us sharing a brain, walking the thin line of our ridiculous and sometimes inappropriate humor and proclaiming our undying love for 80's music.

I knew that Jenn and her husband did not have children and never felt it was appropriate to ask why or when or how. On our way back to the office from lunch one day, a baby talk ensued. I finally got up the nerve to ask about her situation. She openly and honestly explained their struggles with infertility. After much testing and a tragic ectopic pregnancy, her only hope was IVF. As she told me this, we already knew there were two women pregnant in our office. She confided that it was really hard for her to be around that. My heart ached and dropped into my stomach... I was 11 weeks pregnant and going to be the third in the office. I stared straight ahead, trying not to cry and not shout, "Our friendship is over- I am, too, knocked up!" I went home and talked to Jason and we decided it was time to go ahead and announce our news. I only work 2 days a week and I could not let it go another week. I was so terribly sick (not just morning sickness) that this would break a dear friend's heart. I made my announcement at the office the next day and just stared at Jenn with tears in my eyes. Being the awesome and extraordinary person she is, she just expressed her happiness for me and told me that our previous conversation did not apply to me. I still felt bad. Soon after me, 3 more people announced their pregnancies in our office. She went through the next year putting on a happy face and shared our joy every step of the way. She attended baby showers, came to see me when I had Evan, attended birthday parties... all in the name of friendship and never once felt sorry for herself.

Then came her time. She was finally going to do IVF and we all just waited with baited breath. Finally, the news that everyone waited and prayed for; "JENN IS PREGNANT!!!" After congrats, my first words were, "I am going to throw you the showers of all showers!" (Well' something like that) I am not sure if it was the shower of all showers, but I hope it was close. I deliberated and planned and deliberated some more. I rounded up a small posse to help pull it off and here are the fruits of our labors.

By the way, Jenn has birds... that is her thing... so of course we had to do a bird theme!

Greeting her at the gate, a wreath a tiny, baby diapers to get her started!

The food was laid out on a grassy knoll that was adorned with deco birdhouses.

Some of the "bird food" was: Alfredo Bird Nests with Proscuitto Branches, Birdseed Encrusted Meatballs, Petit Turkey Wraps and Stuffed Eggs

A shower must: "Norah punch." Requested by the mom-to-be herself!

For dessert, a selection of cupcakes that were nestled into little nests on the grand cupcake stand.

Postcard From The Grand Canyon

Jason called one morning and said, "Hey, do you want to do a helicopter tour to the Grand Canyon? We stay overnight. We can even stay in a Teepee!"  I responded, "Sure, sounds fun. Well, except the teepee part." So, the next thing I know we packed up, sent the kids to my parents and headed to the airport for the tour. By the way, one of the many perks my hub gets with his job.

I have never been on a helicopter. I have admired them from a far. I am quite fascinated with the ghetto bird (a.k.a., the police helicopter), but have never taken flight in one. Now that would be some tour... a ride along in the police helicopter! I would pay good money for that... but I digress... anyhow...when I was a kiddo, I remember being in San Francisco and getting the opportunity to take a ride. I flat out refused and stayed with my aunt. Never regretted it. My mom was a little shocked that I agreed to such an adventure. I, on the other hand, was looking forward to it. Until.. the thunder heads started rolling in. The skies got darker and darker as we waited to board. My courage began waning. They finally swept us away and there was no turning back!

We were given our headphones and mic and off we went. I must say, I was pretty brave... well, OK, not too brave. I clawed Jason's knee everytime there was a bump. At one point, we hit a little turbulance and everyone heard me let out a little yelp. After finally simmering down a bit, we just enjoyed the splendour of the views that were provided.

In the Grand Canyon... woah!

We flew to the West Rim of the Grand Canyon to a ranch that has been out there for over a hundred years. It is a real working ranch and the guys will be quick to tell you they are not actors, they are real cowboys. The showed to our pine cabin (not Teepee) and even had a gun fight. We were just excited to enjoy some peace and quiet.

A horse drawn carriage took us from the heli-pad to the ranch

After a little down time and a $3 Dr. Pepper, we got to saddle up on Maddy and Martha for a sunset horseback ride.  By the way, they made us wear the helmets. We know we look "special."

We we got midway down the trail, we stopped for photos, a drink and a little entertainment.

Birthday Boy!

A little boy...
you hold him close,
you watch him grow,
you are awed by his spirit,
you marvel at the wonder of his smile.

Two years ago today, our sweet baby boy bounced into our lives! Evan is a paradox of sweet, shy and lovable to mischevious, joker and stubborn. If he knows you are hurting, physically or emotionally, he will drop everything to cuddle up to you and give you some love. If he wants something, he can throw a mean fit and not stop. Evan loves to make you laugh, but also knows exactly what buttons to push. This little chatterbox is never short of words at the tip of his tongue and I marvel at some of the things that he comes up with.

Evan is everything good with a side of naughty.

The other night I sat in my chair in his bedroom and cuddled him like I did when he was a baby. I think he knew his mommy was having a moment. I reveled at how long his body has grown, how he used to fit in the crook of my body. I teared up a bit thinking that his chubby little cheeks were quickly fading. I started to tear up and those blue eyes looked up and he whispered, "Love you, mommy." What more can a mom ask for?

Happy Birthday, my sweet Evan Leith...
We love you!

Preschool, Not School

If anyone knows my Norah, then you know she is a bit shy. She takes a little time to warm up to people, but is just the sweetest once she thaws. We have been quite worried how preschool was going to go over. We made great leaps and bounds at her church class. She even did a preschool class on Fridays and loved it.

She told me that she was not going to preschool. Period.

Knowing my little stubborn goat, I just dropped the subject and chose to bring it up now and then. I told her that some of her friends were going to be there. No dice. I told her that she already knew her teacher and loves her. (She does music at church) Nothing. She even went as far as to tell me that Miss Dana (her Friday teacher) told her that she did not have to go to preschool. Really? I think somewhere between "art projects" and "crafts" she suddenly became sold on the subject. Was that a little drip coming off the ice? I think so. By the time we went to the orientation and made a special name tag, I could not convince her otherwise. Preschool was cool and I could barely contain her.

On her way home the first day I asked how she liked preschool to which she replied, "Mommy, it's preschool not school!"

Hmmm, already a smarty pants!

Making cookies with Daddy for an after school, excuse me, preschool treat!

Not to be talked out of a dress, here she is all dolled up for the big day

Evan thrilled to have Mommy to himself for a few hours!
Actually, he asked me to go pick up "Na Na" because "I miss her!"
So sweet!

I am going to miss my little partner!

I know she looks less than thrilled, but it was just the picture. I did not want to monopolize Miss Natalie, so I settled for one click.Miss Natalie looks adorable and we love her!

Waving goodbye before heading in!

A Conversation

Norah: Mommy, why are you smiling at those pictures?

Me: I am just looking at how tiny you and Evan used to be. It makes me want another tiny baby.

Norah: Another baby?

Me: Yes. Tiny babies are so sweet and precious. Do you want another baby in our house?

Norah: No, not right now.

Me: Really? Why not?

Norah: Because Daddy would be very angry if you had another baby.

Me: Oh, he would? Hmmm... If you had to choose, would you want a brother or a sister?

**PAUSE**

Norah: Neither.
